Vampire Books You Should Read Instead of Twilight

Contributed by Brianna.
Adults, Book Reviews, Read-a-Likes, Teen, Uncategorized No Comments »

While I’ll admit that the Twilight series is a multimillion dollar industry, to the more seasoned reader it’s most definitely lacking something in, well, substance. And, apparently, another movie based on the series has just come out, guaranteeing another record-breaking run at the box office. Millions of squealing teenage girls and their lonely mothers will be flocking to theaters for their fix of the blood-sucking undead. Good for them.

But what about the rest of us? Those of us who like our vampires without the stigma of a sparkling Robert Pattinson (Is that his name? I’m not actually interested enough to Google it. ). Well, there are always the classics of vamp-lit: Dracula, and almost anything by Anne Rice, but what about something that was written this century? Well, I’ve made it my mission this month to bring you a list of books featuring our fanged friends/fiends that you won’t be ashamed to be seen reading.

First up, Dead Until Dark, by Charlaine Harris - On the surface, this might sound a bit like the above mentioned girl-meets-vampire story, but Harris’s characters have a lot more depth and complexity to them, plus there’s a serial killer running around. That’s always fun. Plus it’s the basis for a really steamy tv show.

Then there’s Dark Prince, by Christine Feehan. This one is more of a romantic sort of story, written by one of the best paranormal romance authors around. It’s great for those who love the brooding, tormented hero type.

For a bit of a change, I give you Christopher Moore’s You Suck: a love story. It’s the tale of a man who wakes up to find out that his girlfriend is a vampire, and now he’s one, too.

Abraham LIncoln: Vampire Hunter, by Seth Grahame-Smith - The co-author of “Pride and Pejudice and Zombies” brings us a world where our legendary 16th President was killing vampires in his spare time.

And, finally, The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova, where an ancient book, a missing professor, and countless dark secrets send a girl off in search of the truth of Vlad the Impaler. This one is my personal favorite on the list.

So there you have it, vamp-fans. Five books and no sparkles, and something for everyone who isn’t going to be crowding into the theaters this weekend.
